Saltburn Jazz Night Christmas Party with
The Louis Prima Tribute
The Man who Invented Las Vegas

He was the hippest of the hip. Before Louis Prima, Vegas was a seedy gambling town known mostly for its’ mafia connections. After his show revolutionised the city’s entertainment it became the number one showbiz destination. Frank, Sammy, Marilyn, Cary, Dean, they all came to see Louis Prima, along with the crowds who queued round the block till six in the morning. And just when his career seemed to be winding down he had his biggest hit of all. In Walt Disney’s Jungle Book he played King Louis the Most and sang I’m the King of the Swingers which turned him once again into a star. In this tribute, you’ll hear all the great songs – Just A Gigolo, I Ain’t Got Nobody, Buona Sera, Angelina, Black Magic, Zooma, Zooma, When You’re Smilin’ and all the fun and gags and nonsense as well.

Trombonist Dave Batchelor and Saxophonist Hamish McGregor lead a specially assembled all star band in a loving recreation of the Louis Prima Vegas Show

Doors and bar: 6.45pm
Tickets: £12.00

This Friday, 30th September, Saltburn Community Theatre welcomes the return of Cipher. Last appearing in the community theatre with
‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ they return with this 1925 silent film version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, directed by Rupert Julian.

This is a classic adaptation of the novel by Gaston Leroux. It stars Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially disfigured ‘Phantom’. It is a masterpiece of horror that shocked cinema for decades.

The film is most famous for Lon Chaney’s intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film’s premiere. The impressive sets of the Paris Opera House, the catacombs, the colour footage, and the lavish costuming, all add to the atmosphere of the film. This was truly the masterpiece of Chaney’s career and ranks as one of the greatest tour-de-force performances of the silent era.

The grand atmospheric melodrama with its’ balance of terror and tragedy provides a perfect vehicle for the dark ambient jazz soundscapes of Cipher who provide the live score to the film.

All tickets £6.00 Available from Saltburn Health Foods.

The Black Swan – Cert: 15 – Runtime: 108 mins

Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side – a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

In a rural French village an old man and his only remaining relative cast their covetous eyes on an adjoining vacant property. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, so are dismayed to hear the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter’s hearts they think only of getting the water. A true classic.
